About Matthew

As the creator, art allows me to influence the people around me and throughout the world. My fundamental inspiration for making art has always originated from everyday life where I get to see the world around me with a unique perspective. I want to feel the pain and joy of my artwork and continue to consider every current piece as an opportunity to challenge my skills and to better communicate the emotion of the message I am developing.

Creative Process

My art is based on communication used in an artistic form that displays situations that not many people notice in modern-day society. I want people to investigate and challenge how the story is interpreted through their own eyes. I conduct the process by communicating personal themes with imagination while using particular symbols such as ducks in every piece. In my eyes “a family of ducks” is the perfect representation of a “happy American family”. When you think of the idea of a “happy American family” especially portrayed in movies you think of a father, mother, son, and daughter that get along with each other, have a great relationship physically and emotionally and are able, to be honest with one another. In my eyes when I see a group or family of ducks in the lake, park, or even flying in the sky they all seem to have a bond so powerful this inspires me to draw them and create stories and concepts for them. If you think about it ducks are always in a group, when I see them in the sky migrating they migrate for the better, whether this means a warmer climate and a safer environment they always try to do what’s best for their family. This relates to human families in the sense of security and a family bond. As humans, when we see a group of ducks or animals in general we automatically assume they are happy.

Ducks may not understand the same emotions as us but we can imagine that like family ducks may have issues that they keep to themselves. I use ducks to show what society does not want us to see. For instance, America conceals what they want us to hear and what we should whether it’s politically or environmentally. I draw using a minimalist approach because I want to try to communicate a clear idea and make use of graphite, charcoal, acrylic paint to convey certain emotions by color and using a sharpie to add as much detail as possible to show in each piece. My work revolves around interpretations in my life and I expand on my thoughts as an artist by experimenting with mixed media. One example of this is what I have recently been working on which is about the coronavirus which depicts the current situation happening around the world. My main focus has been the world struggles currently concerning the loss of jobs, political wars, and serious illness.
